Spring Football Schedules Changed

Due to the release of End of Course Exam assignments by our administration, we have decided to adjust the dates of spring football. Our coaches will be giving End of Course Exams at times they would have been at practice, so we have adjusted the schedule to make sure that does not happen.

We will start spring practice next Monday, April 26th. There will be no after school practice or morning meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday because of TAKS testing. The entire schedule for Varsity/JV and 9th Grade will be posted on this site.

The spring scrimmage date has been moved to Monday, May 24th. The 9th grade will play at 5:30 and the Varsity/JV will play at 7:00.

We are excited to get back on the field and get to work on the 2010 season.

Spring Update

Freshman Orientation was last night, and we had a great turnout. I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming group and the future of Mustang Football. Thanks to all the parents who turned out.

The off-season program has been going strong. The kids just accomplished their "perfect day" and moved out of the Iron Horse Phase of our off-season program. It was tough physically and mentally, but the kids responded well to adversity. We will start next week on the field in preparation for Spring Football, which will start on May 3rd.

Our annual Spring Fundraiser will kick off next Tuesday, April 6th with card sales. The kids will have one week to sell their cards, culminating in the "Blitz" on Tuesday, April 13th after school. Our goal is for every student-athlete to sell 20 cards. Remember, every dollar earned goes back to our program in some form or fashion.

Special thanks to Sergeant Shimmick from the Grapevine Police Department who I asked to come to talk to our kids about drugs, alcohol, and choices they make in their day to day lives. He gave a great talk to our kids, and volunteered his time on his day off. Thanks Sergeant!

Like I told our 9th grade group last night, there are a lot of positive things going on in Mustang Football, and it’s an exciting time to be a Mustang. Keep the momentum going.

End of Season Notes

As the reality of the end of our season starts to set in, I wanted to send a note out to the Mustang faithful about the journey we’ve taken over the last several months.

What an amazing season it was. Our team has affectionately become known as the "Miracle Mustangs." I couldn’t think of a more fitting nickname. Our kids have overcome all obstacles standing in their way this year. They did it by playing as a TEAM, by being coachable, and by having a great attitude, even when things were not going their way.

Before the season, NO ONE gave them a chance to accomplish what they did this year. Everyone should be very proud of them.

Our seniors have left a wonderful legacy to our future Mustangs. They have put Grapevine football back on the map by leaving with a winning record, a trip to the playoffs, and a 6-1 district record. I have always believed you can only go as far as your senior leadership. Our senior leadership was unbelievable this year.

I would like to send a personal thank you out to our fans, our band, our cheerleaders, our spirit rustlers, and our Fillies, who are such an important part of the Friday night experience. I would also like to thank our booster club members who do so much work, and devote so much time behind the scenes to give our kids something special. All of the hard work does not go unnoticed.

Lastly, I’d like to thank our coaches. These men devote a great deal of time and energy to help your young men be successful. They did a great job this year.

I am very excited about the future of Mustang football. We have a lot to look forward to.

Our leadership committee was right on this summer, when it chose our theme for the 2009 season:

One TEAM......Resurrected!

Mission Accomplished.

Playoffs!

Wow. Who would have thought we would be talking about playoffs 10 weeks ago? What an amazing transformation it has been.

Our kids have done a great job of staying with it through the thick and thin. They have learned how to win, and they have learned how to win close games......4 of them.

We have a tremendous challenge against Marcus. They are a very good football team who has improved since our first game against them. I know this, we are going to give it all we have. Come out and support your Mustangs.

The Varsity will report to the fieldhouse at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. The JV who are traveling with us will report at 9:45 a.m. The JV will wear jeans and their away jerseys and stand on the sidelines during the game. Hopefully, they have some games like this in their future.

See you Saturday.

Lewisville Re-Scheduled to Friday, September 18th

The Lewisville Head Coach, the Lewisville Principal, myself, and Dr. Hollingsworth made the call to re-schedule tonight’s game against Lewisville to next week.

Although we had just gotten the all clear whistle at 8:25, the radar showed another big cell headed our way. Rather than deal with the going in and out and taking a chance we would not be able to finish the game, we opted to re-schedule.

Due to 80% chances of thunderstorms tomorrow, we opted to re-schedule to next Friday because Lewisville also had a bye week.

So, we’ll go back to work. The kids will have the rest of the weekend off, and we will have a normal game week schedule for next week.

Schedule Changes & Patience

Dear Parents:

Entering the first year of starting a football program is a daunting task, to say the least. Entering a first year program with nine new coaches and construction right in your front and back yard makes the task of planning even more difficult.

We have made several adjustments to our practice schedules as a result of these things.

As I always tell my coaches, everything is subject to change, if I think it is in the best interest of our kids. We have made adjustments to our schedule to help your kids with heat and recovery time.

I also realize these changes put a burden on parents, especially the parents of our younger players, because they are unable to drive. I can definitely sympathize and do apologize for any inconvenience the changes may have caused.

However, I will continue to make changes as I see fit, if they are to the benefit of our kids and our program. I hope you will be flexible.

If you have an issue, send me an email or pick up the phone and call.

Thanks for your patience.

9th Grade Practice Adjustments

Starting on Wednesday, we will be making some practice changes for our 9th Grade. When we initially set the schedule, we did not know if we would have access to all of our fields. Since we do, we will adjust our schedule accordingly.

They will practice from 8:30 - 10:45 this Saturday morning, followed by the Blitz Fund Raiser. We need some parent volunteers to help drive the kids around during the Blitz. Contact Coach Hunter with questions.

End of Year Report

We had a great spring in all aspects. Although we did not put the pads on this spring, we accomplished a great deal on the field. We installed the majority of our offensive and defensive schemes. There are a lot of question marks still remaining because we have not seen our guys in pads yet.

However, the tempo, work ethic, and attitude was outstanding all spring. We have a lot of things to build on, and I am excited for the summer to begin.

Summer is a great time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate. However, we must always have our eye on the bullseye. Make sure we are signed up for Speed & Strength Camp, commit to 7 on 7, and attend other camps in order to get better this summer. Remember, you either you get better or you get worse, you never stay the same!

I will continue to post times and dates as we finalize them for 2-a-days, pre-season meetings, Football 101 for Moms, and more starting in August.

We have a lot going on this summer between Speed & Strength, 7 on 7 games, linemen challenges, Youth Football Camps, Metroplex Passing Academy, other camps, and vacations.

I hope everyone has a safe and productive summer.

Fund Raising and Expectations

We had great success with our Spring Fund Raiser. Our kids rose to the challenge presented to them. All of the funds will go back to our program in many different forms...new uniforms, cleats for our varsity players, updated video equipment, and field house updates. Our top seller was Scott Harbin, and the winning team was our 3rd period 9th grade class. Great job!

I think there is a great lesson in our fund raiser about expectations. Our kids were expected to do a great job selling, and that’s exactly what they did. Hopefully we can carry high expectations and results onto the football field, as well.

Discount Cards

Discount cards were sent home with every football player today. Our goal is for all football players to sell 20 cards in the next week. If you look closely at the cards, the value far exceeds the $20 they cost. All proceeds are going to benefit our program and your kids in some form or fashion!

If you have seen the field house lately, you notice a lot of change occurring. I would like for the changes to continue. Our kids deserve nothing less than the best in everything we do!

Thank you for your support.

The Future

I caught a glimpse of the future last night at 9th Grade Orientation. It was a great turnout and I enjoyed meeting all of our young football players. We are definitely heading in the right direction. Thanks for your support.

Lift-a-Thon Success

I just wanted to thank all of you who donated and/or sponsored our football players for their lifts during our annual Lift-a-Thon Fund Raiser. Installation

We have started to implement our offensive and defensive schemes and fundamentals over the last week and a half. I am very impressed with the way our kids pick things up. We have almost everything in. Now, we just need to go back and coach all the little details that are the difference between winning and the alternative to winning.

We have started to settle kids in on one side of the ball so we can maximize their gains throughout the spring in one position. By no means is anything set in stone, but we felt this was the best approach for our team right now. I realize some kids may not necessarily agree with where we have placed them right now. However, we have to make decisions we feel are in the best interest of our TEAM.

As usual, I have nothing but great things to say about the way our kids work. They are doing everything we ask. I foresee a very productive spring even though we are not having spring ball.

Defensive Coordinator Finalized

After an extensive and time consuming search, I am pleased to announce I have found the best candidate for Defensive Coordinator right here on our staff. I have named Carl Anderson as the new Mustang Defensive Coordinator.

The search included interviews with a current head coach, a former head coach, and 4 current defensive coordinators. I felt like Coach Anderson and I clicked on our idea of how we should play defense more than anyone else I talked to throughout the process.

Congratulations to Coach Anderson.

Summer Rapidly Approaching

Summer is rapidly approaching for all of us. Recently, several items were sent home with your sons detailing summer camp information. I am a big believer that "you either get better or you get worse, you never stay the same." Summer camps are an important part of the improvement process. By no means are they mandatory, but I would strongly encourage your son to be part of the Speed & Strength Camp, as well as other camps offered throughout the summer. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding camps.

The kids finished another great week of preparation this week. We will transition into our football skills phase of off-season next week. We will start with fundamentals and gradually progress into the implementation of our schemes as we approach the summer.

Perfect Day!

The Mustang Football team has been working extremely hard the last 3 weeks to attain a "perfect day" in our boot camp phase of off-season. On Wednesday, April 8th the kids reached their goal! They made it through the entire weight workout and mat workout without one mistake. Needless to say, the team and the coaches were very excited about their accomplishment. The Mustangs learned to fight through adversity, rely on their teammates, stay positive, and have great enthusiasm. I learned a lot about our kids during this phase and I am excited to transition forward.
